Soccer club chairman banned for drink driving
Former school caretaker was over the limit
THE chairman of Newbury FC has been caught drink-driving.
Seventy-seven-year-old Keith ‘Keggy’ Moss was stopped by police in the early hours of the morning after they became suspicious about his erratic driving, town magistrates heard last Thursday.
Helen Gambrill, prosecuting, said officers watched Mr Moss, of Coachmans Court, Newbury, driving “hesitantly” in the early hours, pausing for long periods at roundabouts, even though there was no other traffic.
She said that when they stopped and challenged him, they could smell alcohol on Mr Moss’ breath.
Tests subsequently showed 46mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system.
The legal limit is 35mcg.
Mr Moss, who is also a former Newbury school caretaker, admitted driving a BMW in Newtown Road, Newbury, after drinking more than the legal limit.
Phil Kouvaritakis, defending, said his client had been a long-serving caretaker at a Newbury school for until he retired, aged 60.
He added: “He says he only drank three half-pints of ale, so he is baffled as to how he was over the limit.”
Mr Moss was banned from driving for 14 months and fined £75.
In addition he was ordered to pay a £150 criminal courts charge plus £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
