Solent swim raises waves above fund target for Dingley centre

Matt Walburn, along with friends Ian Mobey and Mat Jennings, were due to swim from the Isle of Wight to Portsmouth on August 30, but severe weather conditions at sea saw the challenge postponed by 24-hours.
The group, however, were not deterred – motivated by their own mission to fundraise for the Newbury Dingley centre, which provides care for children up to five with special needs and disabilities.
It is currently fundraising to revamp its new premises at Shaw Social Club, in Almond Avenue, Newbury, at which it hopes to open in November.
Mr Walburn’s youngest daughter, three-year-old Georgia (both pictured, right), who has a rare genetic condition which means she has brain, kidney and eye abnormalities, attends the Newbury centre. Her condition means she has developmental delay and is still learning to walk unaided and is yet to say her first words.
The group completed the swim in two hours, 35 minutes.
They have already smashed their £1,000 fundraising target, with more than £3,250 being donated so far.
Centre manager, Louise Farmer, said: “On behalf of the Dingley team, I would like to say a huge thank you to Matt, Mat and Ian for taking the time to raise much-needed funds for our West Berks centre.
“Such an amazing amount was donated, which will help towards equipping the new centre we are moving into later this year.”
Following the swim, Mr Walburn said: “Dingley is a fantastic organisation who will benefit greatly from our funds raised and be able to continue helping families and children with extra needs.
“The swim was challenging but enjoyable – we managed to avoid a container ship and two hovercrafts en route.”
He added thanks to Solent Charters, who donated the use of a support boat as well as advice, and Cloud9 Kayaks, who shadowed the trio as they swam and provided food and water when needed.
Mr Walburn concluded: “Cheers also to friends and family on the boat who acted as “spotters” in case any of us got into difficulty, but most of all thanks to all of you who have helped us raise an incredible £3,000 for Dingley. It’s helping a great cause.”
