Newbury Soroptimists in Ghana 'recipes for trees' fundraiser with Action Through Enterprise and Henry & Joe's
The Newbury Soroptimists, in collaboration with Action Through Enterprise and the Cheap Street-based Henry & Joe's restaurant, have raise £650 towards the planting of mango and cashew nut trees by rural schools in Ghana.
As part of a plant sale and fete through the summer, Henry & Joe's donated a mango and cashew nut recipe for members of the public to buy.
Sales of this item alone raised £160, towards a fundraising total of £650 from the Soroptimists own charitable activities.
Trees purchased with the funds are to be donated to seven Ghanaian schools, which will be able to use the mangos and cashew nuts to provide meals for over 1,000 schoolchildren.
As many lessons in Ghana - as elsewhere in Africa - are taught outdoors, the trees will also offer much-needed shade.
The Soroptimists branch in Newbury has announced that, following the success of this scheme, it intends to supply two more Ghanaian schools with trees in the New Year.
