Speed still an issue in Hungerford
Following residents’ concerns, reported previously in the Hungerford edition of the Newbury Weekly News, district councillor Paul Hewer (Con) attended a site meeting at Kennedy Meadow with mayor Martin Crane, a municipal highways officer and with neighbourhood police officers.
But Mr Hewer - who pointed out at a recent meeting of the full town council that no formal complaints had been received by West Berkshire Council over the issue during the past decade - remained unconvinced of the need for drastic action.
He said afterwards: “Nothing is ever perfect but, at Kennedy Meadow, the roundabout seems to work in slowing traffic. I’ve lived in Hungerford all my life and I recall that, when it was installed using 106 payments from the Kennedy Meadow developers, it did have a positive effect. It slowed traffic considerably.
“However, there must be space for articulated lorries to use it, so I don’t think raising the roundabout surface is the answer. Theyn could overturn if the turning space is too small.”
Mr Hewer said he had asked police to patrol the area more regularly.
And he agreed with a suggestion by Mr Crane- who previously reported “huge concern” by residents over the issue and warned of a potential fatality - that Speed Indication Devices (SIDs) could be positioned at the area in future.
