Speen parkland fire suspected arson
Bob Mitchell, watch manager of Red Watch at Newbury Fire Station said one pump was called at 4.15pm to Goldwell Park, on the A4, Bath Road, to two separate fires, near a BMX track.
“One fire was rubbish in bushes the other was 300/400 yards away in a litter bin, both caused by toilet rolls which had been set on fire,” said Mr Mitchell, adding one fire was smouldering, the other had burnt out.
Youths in the area told firefighters they had seen flames coming from one of the fires.
“It was lucky the fires were spotted as the grass in the park was very dry,” said Mr Mitchell.
Firefighters used a hosereel to extinguish the other fire and left the scene after half an hour.
The fires were not near any houses and no-one was hurt.
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service has informed police the cause was a suspected arson.
