Spoof Downton Abbey sign taken down in Highclere

The “Twinned with Downton Abbey” signs, on the A343 near the turn-off to Highclere Castle, where the award-winning ITV period drama of the same name was filmed, were mysteriously resurrected last week - in both directions - following which, the NWN received an anonymous letter stating:
“Lets hope that they stay this time as they make us all smile when we pass,” read the letter, signed: ‘A Friend’
The writer’s hopes were short lived however, as the signs have been recently removed again by Hampshire County Council officials, as they were: “Not legitimate,” the county council has confirmed in a statement this week.
The sign, which also appeared in October last year, was also removed in September, when miffed locals included Jane Mack, of Newbury, who regularly drives past whilst visiting her mother, who lives in the village and on spotting the sign had been taken down said at the time:
“I feel very strongly that our British wit and humour should be allowed to be displayed publicly, despite the efforts of a jobsworth council to stifle it.”
The owner of Highclere Castle, Lord Carnarvon, also said at the time he had enjoyed seeing the sign and had no idea why it had been taken down.
