Three for Callum Johnson
THATCHAM CC secured runners-up spot and promotion back to the Thames Valley League’s second level after a comfortable draw with fellow challengers Aldershot on Saturday.
Surprisingly put in to bat by the hosts, Thatcham were in trouble at 81-5 until Jack Young (46) and Matt Denness (20) put on 65 and useful late scores in the teens from Callum Johnson and John Williams enabled Thatcham to post 190 and take their innings into the 52nd over.
But Thatcham killed off the game with spinners Chris Bird and Williams tying down the batsmen before Callum Johnson came on to take 3-19. Williams went on to pocket 3-65 from his 18 overs and only Rory Collins’ unbeaten 60 kept Alderhsot afloat as their innings petered out to 157-8.
Thatcham’s 12 points were enough to keep them in second spot as leaders Royal Ascot beat Purley by 94 runs while Falkland II finished fourth, despite their 137-run defeat against Wokingham II with Purley and Newbury in the next two places, the latter signing off with a draw against Fleet.
