Hungerford ready for action

HUNGERFORD TOWN will be hoping to deal another blow to Leamington’s promotion hopes when the teams meet at Bulpit Lane tonight (Monday) in the Evo Stik League Southern’s Premier Division.

One of the pre-season title favourites following relegation from the Conference North last season, Leamington’s hopes of making a quick return have been jolted by recent form that has seen them record only one win in nine matches, a 2-0 home defeat of relegation battlers Frome Town.

Saturday saw them lost to a single goal at home to another promotion-chasing side, Hungerford’s next opponents Hitchin Town, and the result saw the Warwickshire side slip to 11th in the table, albeit with games in hand on most of the teams above them.

Leamington still boast a potentially lethal marksman in Ben Mackey, who helped to fire Hemel Hempstead into the Conference a couple of seasons ago, and this term returned to the club where his career really got under way.

Manager Paul Holleran has recently bolstered his squad with two loan signings, bringing in young striker Courtney Baker Richardson from Kettering Town and fellow forward Sam Austin from Burton Albion.

Hungerford, whose home game with Weymouth on Saturday was washed out, expect no such problems tonight and manager Bobby Wilkinson expects to have a full squad available, barring suspended defender Gary Horgan.

Despite the recent  bout of postponements, Hungerford continue to hold on to a play-off spot and a win tonight would take them back into third place in the table, three points behind second-placed Chippenham and with a game in hand.
