Hungerford's quick-start back into the zone

Nat Jarvis celebrates Hungerford's second goal on Monday night

HUNGERFORD made up for lost action when romping back into the Evo Stik League Southern Premier’s play-off spots at Bulpit Lane on Monday night.

Relegation battlers Rovers were handed a two-goal blast in the opening seven minutes as Hungerford looked hungry for action and were given a surprise if fortunate start when Alan O’Brien’s cross drifted over goalkeeper Ben John to put the home side in front after only30 seconds.

A Nat Jarvis shot spun over John minutes later as Hungerford rained in the goal attempts and although Nuno Felix had an effort scrambled away from the line, Hungerford might have had double their first half tally with the only other goal seeing Jarvis net a superbly crafted and finished third goal.

It was a chance a minuute for the opening four of the second period before Rovers’ hard-working Jake Mawford was denied on the line by James Rusby, but the only second half goal came late on from Rovers skipper Darren Mullings.

Thatcham Town and Tadley Calleva face tricky away trips on Tuesday night.

Thatcham go to Tuffley Rovers in Gloucestershie, three days after coming from behind to beat Thame United 3-2 at Waterside Park on Saturday when two goals from Jon Bennett and a last-gasp winner from Rob Gerrard secured the points after Ken Feyi had struck twice for the visitors

Tadley Calleva were held to a 1-1 home draw by New Milton Town on Saturday when Brett Denhams was the hosts’ marksman.

Tadley now head to the Isle of Wight tonight (Tuesday) to take on East Cowes Vics with an 8pm kick-off that sees them heading south for a 6pm ferry dash before returning on the a late boat.
