Herring strikes to lift Cusaders

Ian Herring battles through against Wellng

Hungerford Town 1 Welling Utd 0

HUNGERFORD ended their month-long wait for a Vanarama National League win when Ian Hering hammered home an 81st minute winner to end Welling’s resistance at Bulpit Lane on Monday night.

The bottom three side had a depleted defence and goalkepeer Chris Lewington had to carry on for half a game with a thigh injury that limited his movement, while experienced defender Dean Leacock was playing with a broken toe.

But they resisted until those closing minutes, without creating much themselves at the other end as Hungerford dominated for long periods without finding a finishing touch.

Luke Williams went close in the first period and Nicholas Bignall put a header over the top from point-blank range after the re-start. But the winner finally came when Herring collected the ball outside the box and arrowed his shot past Lewington, although there was one final scare when Archie Johnson’s shot through a crowded box but George Legg got down to save and take Hungerford back into the league’s top 10 ahead of Saturday’s visit of Wealdstone.
