Spring flower show attracts new entrants
More than 100 entries for Burghclere and Newtown Horticultural Society's spring show.
BURGHCLERE and Newtown Horticultural Society's Spring show attracted more than 100 entries on Saturday April 9, with several first-time exhibitors.
The show was held at the Portal Hall, Burghclere, and one of the organisers, Liz Ellis, said: “The flower arrangements were beautiful with a new class for The Royal Wedding, which was won by new exhibitor, Sue Wakelin from Woolton Hill with a delightful arrangement of white tulips and roses.”
The judges were Eric Williams (daffodils, flowers, rhubarb and eggs), and Denise Allen (flower arranging), with the daffodil classes well supported.
The winner of both the Spring Cup and Daffodil Society Medal was John Eckton, from Ramsdell.
The rhubarb class was also well supported, and won by Rachel Santer, another first-time exhibitor.
With a steady flow of visitors, including North West Hampshire MP, Sir George Young, the tea and cake bar and plant stall which was stocked with plants and seedlings from members did a good trade, and the afternoon finished with an auction of the flowers and rhubarb
