St Andrews crowned national orienteering champions
The school’s team, consisting of 17 girls and boys aged between eight and 12, were competing in the British Schools’ Orienteering Championships in Cheshire.
More than 1,000 children from all over the United Kingdom entered the tournament, using only maps and compasses to locate control points in the Delamere Forest.
When the final results were calculated, St Andrew’s year five boys, William Wakelam, Fergus Sweeting and Fraser Woodward, were awarded bronze medals, while year six girls, Francesca Rogers and Isabella Woodward, won gold and silver.
These results, together with that of boys’ captain Ben Hutchins, meant that St Andrew’s were crowned overall British champions in the middle school category.
The teacher in charge of orienteering at the school, Glyn Thomas said: “I am extremely proud of my whole squad.
“We had a lovely weekend in the north-west and there was considerable excitement on the way home in the minibuses”
The squad will defend its title at next year’s championships in Derbyshire.
