Grammar schools combined to form a new comprehensive.

St Bartholomews's School embraced the new thinking in education in 1975, when it was formed from an amalgamation of Newbury Grammar School for Boys and Newbury County Girl's Grammar School. The new school became comprehensive and co-educational and not everyone was in favour. But the Newbury Weekly news reported that the head Basil Cooper was looking forward to the challenge in the September term with enthusiasm and confidence. He is pictured at the old Luker site with some of his senior pupils- the new school officers, in July 1975. The new school officers were Elizabeth Humphries, Robert Brown, Carole Downer, Nicholas Caiger-Smith, Stephen Townsend and Amanda Rucker.
