St Bart's pupils show strength in German at national spelling bee final

Year seven pupils Poom Narongpun, aged 12, and Joseph McLaughlin, aged 11, took part in the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee competition final held at the Anglia Ruskin university, Cambridge, on Friday after making it through the first heats.
While neither ranked in the top four in the competition, both were said to be extremely pleased to have made it to the final.
They were each required to revise 200 German words ahead of the final, at which they went up against 36 competitors from across England and Wales and performed in front of an audience of teachers.
Participants could choose whether to be quizzed on words in German, French or Spanish.
German teacher at St Barts school, Mim Collinson, said: “The competition encourages language learning and is also fun for the students.
“Taking part in the national finals is a fantastic achievement and we congratulate Poom and Joseph.
“They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we also found some time during the day to have a look around Cambridge.”
Thousands of school pupils entered the competition. St Bartholomew’s pupils Megan Lay and Chiara Ricci competed in French and made it through to the regional finals, held in Brighton earlier in the year, however didn’t qualify for the national finals.
