St Nicolas school 'needs improvement'
The report, following a two-day inspection last month, found that teaching skills, leadership and management all needed improving.
The Ofsted rating system runs from outstanding to good, to requires improvement, to inadequate.
The recent grading marked a slip in standards for the school, who were graded as good in last year’s report.
Areas highlighted for improvement were that pupils needed to be given harder work to make good progress and that the skills of teaching assistants should be used to greater effect in class discussions.
Managers have been asked to be more rigourous in checking that teaching is consistently good or better.
Governors were not doing enough to ensure that money spent is having enough of an impact on improving the progress of all pupils, it added.
However, the report did highlight that leaders had a clear vision for the school and understand what needs to be improved.
It also reported that attainment was above average in both English and Mathematics, and that pupils were particularly good at reading.
Pupils were polite, considerate and always willing to help others, while parents and carers were pleased with the school and happy to recommend it to others.
Headteacher Keith Harvey said: "Actions to make the recommended improvements are already in place and we have taken the report as constructive criticism that will help us to achieve these goals as soon as possible.
“We are delighted by the positive comments in the report and are now focussed on a clear path to achieving the vision that is shared by everyone involved in the school."
West Berkshire's Executive Councillor for Education, Irene Neill, said, "The report is very encouraging in that it acknowledges the many good points about the school.
“Coupled with the recognition that there is a clear vision for improvement, the outlook is very positive."
