Staff and children at Baughurst pre-school celebrate glowing Ofsted

Clean sweep of outstanding markings

STAFF and children at a Baughurst pre-school have been celebrating after an Ofsted inspector gave them a full sweep of outstanding ratings.

The privately-owned Little Stars pre-school at Heath End Village Hall, Heath End Road, was marked outstanding (grade 1) overall, in a recent report following an inspection on October 20.

This was a rise of one grade from the overall grade 2 marking given to the pre-school following an Ofsted inspection more than three years ago, on March 13, 2013.

Effectiveness of the leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare and outcomes for children were also all marked outstanding in the latest Ofsted report.

The inspector noted that staff were ‘vigilant’ in keeping children safe as they played at the pre-school and also as they explored the local community.

The enthusiasm and outstanding teaching of the staff inspired the young children, who “eagerly join in, concentrate and persevere”, said the inspector.

“Their [teachers’] clear explanations and thought-provoking questions enhance children’s understanding and promote their use of new vocabulary.”

Children had “superb opportunities to take part in daily physical exercise in the fresh air and explore the local area as they walked to the local library to choose new books”.

All children made excellent progress in their learning and development and partnerships with parents were excellent.

Parents said they valued the depth of care, the experience, dedication and responsibility staff demonstrated on a daily basis, while recognising that staff provided their children with an extremely secure base for future learning.

To further improve, the pre-school should implement plans to share ideas and resources with parents to provide further continuity and support in specific aspects of children’s care and learning.

In compiling the report, the inspector reviewed records and procedures relating to safeguarding, risk assessment and health and safety.

The inspector also looked at children’s records, the staff’s planning and evaluation of activities and how they exchanged information with parents.

They also took into account the views of parents spoken to on the day and written communications from parents.

A joint observation with the manager, discussion of staff training and experience was also carried out at the pre-school, which was registered in 2012.

It is open term-time only, Monday, and Wednesday to Friday, with eight children on the roll, aged from two to four, and 26 places.
