Still no answer to town centre crack mystery

Services manager for the council, Granville Taylor said the extension was due to the complicated nature of the hydro-geological survey, commissioned by the council two years ago.
“It’s a significant piece of work and a sizeable report,” said Mr Taylor.
“They underestimated the amount of work involved to review to situation.”
He added Costain has declined permission for the report to be made public owing to confidential material owned by the contractor being studied in-depth throughout.
Damage in the town centre first started to appear in 2010 while water extraction works were carried out beneath the construction site of Parkway, considered by the council to be the cause of the problem. However Costain have so far attributed the subsidence to the unusually hot weather.
The firm will announce in the coming weeks whether it accepts liability over the cause of damage to Victoria Park and the surrounding area and if it will foot the bill, with costs for the survey and repairs soaring to more than £24,000.
Mr Taylor stressed the matter will be dragged through the courts if no verdict is made by the middle of September, the final course of action to get answers from the contractors.
“It all hangs on what their response is,” he said.
