It's quiz night for the NWN Over 80's Parcel Fund in Newbury's Bowlers Arms
Parcels were first delivered over 100 years ago to the ladies and gentlemen of Newbury, writes Jo Fulker, co-ordinator of the NWN Parcel Fund.
And in those days it was either a tin of tobacco or a packet of tea. Time has changed considerably in many ways from motor cars being on the streets of Newbury, to computers and mobile phones being invented.
The Parcel Fund might have changed slightly but the meaning of it has remained the same and in 2022 we still deliver a parcel from the Newbury Weekly News as a way of thanking our elderly residents for all they have done during their lifetime.
This year’s food is now ordered from Sainsbury's and we have all the names on our very big list to deliver a parcel to this year.
Thank you to everyone who has helped update our list and informed us of all the changes.
We still have fundraising events going on and this weekend if you are shopping at Sainsbury’s please don’t forget to drop a few pennies into the collection buckets and our thanks go to the Kennet School pupils and members of Newbury Rotary Club who are giving up some of their time to help us raise the money we still need.
Our very big thanks this week go to Thatcham Relief in Need Charity who very kindly agreed to donate £3,000 to the Over 80's Parcel Fund, which is very much appreciated indeed.
Tonight (Thursday), is our big quiz night, at the Bowlers Arms. Teams have been booking up fast these last few weeks and I am sure we now have nearly a full house.
There are some fantastic raffle prizes this year and I am hoping we will be making more money that will help pay our very big Sainsbury’s bill that I have to settle this coming Monday, November 21.
This means donations are still very much needed and if you are able to donate through The Good Exchange, Greenham Trust will match the amount you donate, so in fact double the money raised.
To do this please scan the QR code, which takes you to the correct place on The Good Exchange.
Alternatively, please send a cheque made payable to ‘NWN Over 80's Parcel Fund’ for the attention of Jo Fulker, Newbury News, Faraday Road, Newbury.
