Stolen goods woman arrested...after calling police!
But that is exactly what Samantha Justine Gillespie did.
And as a direct result of her own complaint, she appeared in the dock at West Berkshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 18.
For detectives, who retrieved the haul, recognised items which had been looted in a recent burglary, magistrates were told - and so they charged the 42-year-old, of Newtown Road, Newbury.
The bizarre twist of fate was outlined by Helen Waite, prosecuting, who said: “The original victim in this case had his house burgled between June 13 and 16. On June 26 this defendant reported to police that certain items had been stolen from her room.
“Police searched her former partner’s room and the items were recovered. Even though she knew they were the result of a burglary, she herself called police. She had sold several other items with her then partner. Her call brought all this into the open.
Ms Gillespie, who has one previous conviction, admitted receiving a stolen CD player and speakers of unknown value belonging to John Bruton between June 22 and June 26 this year.
Steve Molloy, defending, conceded: “This is a slightly unusual case. Why would she call police if she knew the items had been stolen?”
In explanation, Mr Molloy said: “She was breaking free. A ‘Think First’ programme had given her the confidence to do so. Her former partner, Mr Carl Gillespie, has considerably more previous convictions than she has. She had suffered considerable domestic violence and had a drug problem but has now been drug free for six months. She was trying to turn her life around.”
Magistrates imposed a nine month conditional discharge and ordered her to pay £84 costs with £15 surcharge.
