Wasing Estate completes annual litter pick in Aldermaston, Brimpton and Woolhampton

An array of household items including a toilet, a lawn mower and a few flat screen TVs were found during the Wasing Estate’s annual litter pick.

The litter pick took place on Friday, March 11, and saw 40 Wasing colleagues collecting rubbish and fly-tipped items from the roadsides and riverbanks in Aldermaston, Brimpton and Woolhampton.

Wasing Estate carries out the annual task to help protect wildlife and vegetation contained within the areas that come under the estate’s countryside stewardship scheme.

Chief executive Andrew Perkins said: “We manage an abundance of varied wildlife habitats on the estate and every year we devote hundreds of acres to help protect the environment within our stewardship, feeding a host of birds, bees and insects and allowing nature to thrive.

“A very big thank you to all of the Wasing team who volunteered to litter pick and help keep out local community rubbish-free.”

During the litter pick, the volunteers from Wasing also collected a sink, shower doors, tyres and several energy drink cans.

The estate looks after around six miles of river frontage of the River Kennet and River Enborne and the area has one of the largest ranges of flora and fauna of any lowland river in the UK.

Wildlife contained within it includes 21 species of dragonfly, cranefly, the whorl snail, rare bat species, and numerous farmland birds such as yellowhammer, skylarks, linnet and chaffinch.
