Strikes hit West Berkshire
Schools and services in West Berkshire and North Hampshire affected as thousands walk out today (Wednesday)
THE largest mass strike in UK history since 1926 has begun today (Wednesday), with thousands of people across West Berkshire expected to join millions around the country in picket lines and demonstrations railing against changes to public sector pensions.
As of late last night over half of West Berkshire's schools confirmed they are closed, Newbury Magistrates court has only a trial court running, and while West Berkshire Council has said it will maintain vital services as much as possible Unison, the council's largest union, said it expects a strong turnout which could have a knock-on effect felt in the job centre and benefits offices.
Thames Valley Police has said some members of staff are expected to participate in the industrial action, but has worked closely with union representatives on a protocol agreement to ensure policing services are maintained.
Newburytoday.co.uk will have rolling coverage of the day of action throughout the day so log on throughout the day to find out more.
