Horris Hill School students take part in 24 hour football match to raise money for Sport in Mind

A group of pupils played football for 24 hours in a bid to raise awareness and money for a sporting charity, writes Caitlyn Gregory.

From 4pm on Friday, June 20 until 4pm on Saturday, June 21 the students from Horris Hill School in Newtown took on the gruelling 24 hour charity match in aid of Sport in Mind.

Every year, the graduating year 8 class organise a charity fundraising event as part of the school’s leavers programme and, this year, the class of 12 and 13 year olds was split into two teams - led by teachers Jack Davis and Ben Powell - for the school’s longest ever football match.

Throughout the clash, the students were joined by many supporters and substitutes, such as Newbury Ladies Football Club, Sport in Mind representatives, Horris Hill staff, younger students and parents.

Horris Hill’s head of boarding and pastoral, Jade Vidler, was a particularly impressive player, not only taking on a central role in organising this event but scoring a hat-trick on the day too.

“With tired legs but unbreakable spirits”, the match ended with Mr Davis’ team emerging as the champions.

However, when it came to celebratory penalty shootout, Mr Powell’s team clawed the overall score back to a draw.

Reflecting on the event, marketing, communications and events co-ordinator Sophie Adnitt said:

“The 24-hour charity football match has left a lasting impression on the Horris Hill community.

“It was more than a fundraising event — it was a powerful display of pupil initiative, teamwork, and shared values.

“We are incredibly proud of the Year 8s and everyone who made this unforgettable experience possible.

“Thank you to everyone who donated, participated, or cheered us on — this was truly a whole-school effort.”

The match has currently raised just under £1,900 for Sport in Mind but the JustGiving page remains open - http://bit.ly/40pf92K - as the school strives to hit its £2,000 target.

Sport in Mind is mental health charity that supports people through physical activity programmes, ensuring the benefits of sport are accessible to all.

Since it was established in 2010, its work has helped more than 31,000 people and Horris Hill said it was “proud to be assisting this vital cause”.
