Falkland Primary School celebrates summer fete

Thousands of pounds has been raised as Falkland Primary School enjoyed the return of its summer fete, writes Lars Mucklejohn.

The annual event, organised by the Falkland School Association (FSA), was last celebrated in 2019 before being suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s fete, sponsored by Newbury estate agents Downer & Co, has raised more than £5,000 for the school.

The money will go towards projects such as repairing the Key Stage 2 play area and renewing the school’s library.

FSA chair Alex Whyatt said that the event attracted hundreds of visitors.

“So many people came – it was unbelievable," she added. "It was heaving from the moment we started to the finish.

"We had everything going on.”

She said there was a “glam tent” with face painting, a raffle that raised £2,000, a barbecue, three tombolas, and a silent auction “with lots of generous donations from companies and businesses all over Berkshire”.

There were many stalls, including those run by the pupils themselves.

“The lovely thing about our fete is that all of the year sixes run their own stalls," Mrs Whyatt said. "We had 10 stalls from them.

“The rain stayed away, which was a real stroke of luck.”

She said it had been “really wonderful to see our school community and more coming out again to public events”.
