Supporters defend sports club plans

There has been a mixed reaction to proposals to build two dugouts and spectator seating at Lambourn Sports Club

SUPPORTERS of Lambourn Sports Club have defended plans to build two dugouts and spectator seating.

The proposals are to be considered by West Berkshire planners but have already triggered criticism from one near neighbour.

Alan Kennedy, of Newbury Road, Lambourn, has written a letter of objection to planners in which he opines that the proposed stand is “too large and the design and colour is intrusive.”

He added: “There have never been more than 30 or so spectators at any match of any kind in the past three years and this is unlikely to change. There is no need for such a large development and the height and colour should be reviewed.”

Natural England, a non-departmental public body, raised no objection but asked planners to “fully take account of the environmental value of this site in the decision making process.”

Now club secretary Martyn Benson has responded to the criticism, expressing disappointment with “the complaints of one person who has never watched a Lambourn game but can comment on our average attendance.”

He added: “At our opening home fixture this season, more than 100 people attended. Many hours of hard work have gone into improving the club's already fantastic facilities. The club won promotion to the Hellenic league last season. The league rules state that we are required to have dugouts and, as a minimum, a stand that will seat 50 people. We are all working very hard to move the club forward.”

He pointed out that the dugouts have been painted green to blend in, rather than a red and white colour scheme which was initially considered.

Lambourn resident Faye Williams said: “The refurbishment of Lambourn Sports Club is an asset to the village. The local footballers have worked extremely hard to fulfil their dream in being promoted to the Hellenic League. This has involved a huge amount of work which they have completed in their own time, using their own skills and free labour.

“The pitch is outstanding with the dugouts and railings fitting in naturally, causing no disruption, The work completed is outstanding and is a benefit to the adult team as well as the youngsters, so the community should be in support of this and not be negative.”

She added: “If it wasn't for the football section there would be no Lambourn Sports Club as they are the main income. It has not impacted the community in any way - surely the community should be proud of this success?”

The matter will be considered by West Berkshire planners at a date to be fixed.
