Passengers diverted as police attend suspicious package at Newbury train station
Police were called to a suspicious package at Newbury Railway Station early this morning - but it turned out to be a discarded takeaway.
British Transport Police received the call just after 6.30am and National Rail tweeted a warning that trains were unable to stop at the station.
The station was not closed by police, who quickly established the suspect package was, in fact, a box of fried chicken that had been left on a bench.
A spokesperson for British Transport Police told the Newbury Weekly News: “Officers were called to Newbury station at 6.37am today (14 September) following a report of a suspicious item.
"Officers quickly attended and clarified this was a box of fried chicken which had been placed on a bench."
Passengers were advised to walk to Newbury Racecourse train station to pick up a train there, before normal services resumed around an hour later.
