Suspected arson at Thatcham Railway Station

Fire crews say car fire in the early hours of this morning (Sunday) was likely to have been started deliberately

FIREFIGHTERS from Newbury tackled a suspected arson attack at Thatcham Railway Station in the early hours of this morning.

A six-strong Red Watch crew from the fire station were called out at 1.30am to tackle the blaze, a burning Audi estate car parked at the station that was alight.

The fire had spread to the car next to it, an Audi TT, according to Red Watch crew manager Bob Mitchell, who said both cars would probably have to be written off.

"It happened after the last train, there was no-one around - the cars may have been left there over the weekend," said Mr Mitchell, adding there was only one other car in the car park, unaffected by the fire.

Firefighters took about 40 minutes to extinguish the fire and are treating the cause of the incident as suspicious; the British Transport Police have been informed.
