A MAN has been given a suspended prison sentence for harassing a woman in a domestic context.

James Hamill was also made subject to a restraining order designed to protect his victim.

The 24-year-old, of Pound Street, Newbury, appeared for sentencing at Reading Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, September 1.

He had admitted pursuing a course of conduct which amounted to the harassment of Jessica Caroll by attending her address and sending her messages in Newbury between June 26 last year and Sunday, February 7.

Mr Hamill – who is also known as James Hammell, according to court documents – was sentenced to 10 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 18 months.

Magistrates said a custodial sentence, albeit suspended, was necessary because the nature of the offending was so serious.

In addition to the suspended prison sentence Mr Hamill was ordered to pay £85 costs, plus a statutory victim services surcharge of £128.

Finally, he was made subject to a two-year restraining order forbidding him from contacting Ms Carroll either directly or indirectly.
