Reading Magistrates' Court: Suspended prison sentence for Thatcham man caught with Chinese martial arts rice flails




A DISTRICT judge has sentenced a man caught with an ancient Chinese martial arts weapon to a suspended prison term.

In the dock at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday, September 9, was Adrian Lewis.

The same court had previously issued an arrest warrant for him after he failed to turn up as required.

Fifty-seven-year-old Mr Lewis, of Rotary Way, Thatcham, admitted possessing an offensive weapon without lawful authority in Romany Lane, Tilehurst, on Friday, August 5, and failing to surrender to bail for his last scheduled appearance.

Specifically, he pleaded guilty to possessing nunchakus – an Oriental martial arts weapon – in public.

The instrument, also known as rice flails, typically consists of two sticks connected at their ends by a short chain.

District judge Samuel Goozee sentenced Mr Lewis to 21 weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

In addition, Mr lewis was ordered to pay £85 costs, plus a statutory victim services surcharge of £85.
