Hot Fuzz moment: Police rescue swan from busy Newbury road

Traffic was stopped briefly this morning as a swan that had clearly lost its bearings had to be rescued and returned to a place of safety.

The incident happened on Western Avenue near the Robin Hood roundabout and the Thatcham Neighbourhood Policing team briefly stopped the traffic while they rounded up the distracted bird who seemed to be oblivious to the disruption he was causing.

Once they had caught the swan he was taken by van to a safer place along the canal.

The police said on Twitter: "After being briefly detained he thanked us by leaving a small gift in the back of the van."
