THE SWIFT and efficient action of Newbury firefighters who dealt with a small electrical fire at the Newbury Weekly News offices on Monday evening (March 16) has been praised by the company's chief executive officer.

One pump from Newbury Fire Station was called at 8.30pm to the Newbury Weekly News offices in Faraday Road.

On arrival, firefighters discovered a letter from a sign at the rear of the building had caught fire, melted and dropped to the floor ablaze, after the plastic melted.

"We looked up and saw it dripping down," said one of the firefighters.

Firefighters used a hosereel to extinguish the blaze.

The firefighters then made a forced entry to the rear of the premises, in order to isolate the electrical supply to the building.

No-one was hurt.

"It was dealt with super efficiency and speed by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) ," said chief executive officer at the Newbury Weekly News, James Gurney, who was called to the scene.

The cause was put down to an electrical fault.

Firefighters left the scene at 9.20pm.
