Ta-daa! Hungerford's twinning gift sundial is back
FIVE years after it was inadvertently broken, a gift from Hungerford's French twin is back overlooking the town.
The original sundial was gifted to Hungerford by the mayor of Ligueil and was a feature on the wall of the old fire station.
In 2017, when the building was replaced by the current tri-station, it was accidentally smashed during removal.
After some initial wrangling, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS), whose contractors did the damage, agreed to pay for a replacement.
Local stonemason Barry Humphries created the replacement, using photographs of the original.
The new sundial was situated on the wall of the town library and town council offices in Church Street on Sunday, May 29.
It was unveiled at a ceremony attended by a delegation of civic dignitaries and residents of Ligueil.
Hungerford mayor Helen Simpson said afterwards: "As president of Hungerford’s Twinning Association, I was delighted to be present at the unveiling of our new sundial.
"I hope you agree the new sundial looks fantastic – thank you to everyone involved."
