Tadley Common in line-up for UK's best park

Online votes needed to help secure award

TADLEY Common is in line for an award as the UK’s best park.

The common has been nominated for national charity Fields in Trust UK’s Best Park, and now needs the public to vote online to be in with a chance of winning.

Over the last few weeks, 214 nominations have been received by the trust for parks and green spaces countrywide.

The common is lowland heathland, consisting of heather and gorse scrub, and is home to much flora and fauna.

Owned and managed by the Turbary Allotment Charity, the common comprises open space, a site of special scientific interest, play areas and fitness equipment, while cattle graze there.

Field in Trust UK’s chief executive, Helen Griffiths, said: “Recognising the UK’s best park is a way of revaluing our green spaces; not viewing them as a drain on resources for upkeep, but seeing what benefits they bring.

“Access to good-quality recreational space can contribute to the physical and mental health of their local population and provide places for people to get together for community events.”

Fields in Trust safeguards more than 2,600 parks, playing fields, playgrounds, recreation grounds and other open spaces throughout the UK – a total of 12,000 hectares.

The park with the most votes in each of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will be shortlisted and representatives will be invited to attend the awards ceremony at Lord’s cricket ground, in November, where the UK’s Best Park will be named.
