The headteacher of Bishopswood Junior School, Glen Golding, has confirmed the governing bodies of both Bishopswood Infant School and Bishopswood Junior School are currently consulting parents, staff and other interested parties over the proposal to ‘federate’ the two schools, in Bishopswood Road, which would then be overseen by one headteacher and governing body.
“The schools would still remain as two separate schools. There is absolutely no risk to employees jobs,” said Mr Golding, while denying the move was a cost cutting measure. “The proposal to federate is based on the belief that there are many advantages to be had for the children, parents and staff of both schools. It is not based on saving money or compromise,” he said.
He said the benefits of any merger included greater continuity for pupils and parents across the two schools, closer working relationships between the schools, and smooth transition for year two pupils to year three. It would also provide an opportunity to share expertise and resources, greater opportunity for professional development of staff and better value for money.
Although responses to the consultation would not be revealed until April, he said, initial feedback from staff and parents indicated it would be a positive move.
“The challenge that a federation brings is that of ensuring that both schools maintain their separate identities, ethos and culture. That both schools feel of equal value. The governing body of a federation would need to ensure that the correct leadership structure is in place, so that the current strengths of both schools are celebrated.”
Mr Golding has also been interim headteacher of the infant school since October, following the ill health of infant school headteacher, Louise Rand, whose resignation will be effective from April 30.
The consultation period continues until the end of term.
Governing bodies of both schools will meet in mid April to review responses to the consultation, before making a decision and then notifying staff, parents and pupils.
