Tadley residents warned of bogus callers

Suspected bogus callers try to wangle £1,200 for roof structure repairs

Tadley residents are warned to be on their guard, after suspected bogus callers tried to wangle £1,200 for roof structure repairs.

According to Hampshire police, sometime between 12.30pm and 1.30pm, on Thursday February 3, two men called at an address in Briar Way and told the occupant they were looking at faulty trusses (rigid framework of beams to support a roof).

They asked to look in the loft and then told the man he needed £1,200 worth of work doing as he had a leak.

However the occupant did not agree and the two men left.

The first man was described as white, 5ft 6ins, of medium build, aged 40 to 50, with grey thinning hair.

The second man was described as black, 5ft 6ins, of medium build, aged 40 to 50, with dark cropped hair.

The men were believed to be in a white car derived van, marked with black writing on the side, possibly with the sign Astra or similar.

Pc Victoria Brewer said: “This happened during the middle of the day in a relatively busy area so it is likely this van may have been seen by other people.

“Fortunately on this occasion the occupant didn't leave the men alone, or give them any money.

“People who try and commit these crimes are cowardly and prey on vulnerable members of the community.

Anyone with any information should contact Pc Brewer at Whitchurch police station on 101, via the website at www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/contact/message_officer.htm, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
