Tadley teenage hot shot meets Commonwealth medallist

Charlotte Huddart, aged 14, experienced her first competition representing the Great Britain Junior Target Rifle Squad (GBJRS) and achieved a personal best score in the 3x20 (three-position) Sporter Rifle match on August 6.
After her success, Charlotte then met Dan Rivers, from Didcot, a 2014 Commonwealth gold and bronze medallist and former GBJRS member.
A secondary school pupil at the Hurst Community College, Baughurst, Charlotte joined the junior squad in January and has trained hard for this competition, which included under-21 teams from South Africa, Germany, Denmark, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Eire, Isle of Man and Jersey.
Target rifle shooting requires good body strength and mental discipline, and the GBJRS coaching team work with the shooters in areas including nutrition, exercise, technical details and mental preparation.
Miss Huddart said: “The ranges can be noisy with people chatting and moving around.
“You just have to learn to block everything out and concentrate on making your next shot your best shot.”
With several competitions in her sights over the next few months, she is aiming to win medals in the Sporter Rifle matches at the British Air Gun Championships in September, the Scouts National Shooting Competition in October, the Surrey Open in November and the British Open in February.
Beforehand, she has lots of practice lined up with the Basingstoke Air Rifle and Pistol Club and the Hampshire Scout Rifle Club, together with the Scouts National Shooting Squad and the GBJRS.
