Tadley teenager stabbed in Greece

Former Hurst Community College pupil died whilst on holiday with friends in Zakynthos

THE FAMILY of a teenager stabbed to death in Greece is due to fly out to the resort today (Thursday) to investigate the tragedy.

Foreign Office officials confirmed that 19-year-old Robert James Sebbage (pictured aged 14), of Weyhill Close, Tadley, had died following an incident in Laganas in Zakynthos, Greece, in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday).

They were unable to confirm national media reports that Mr Sebbage, a former pupil at Hurst Community College in Baughurst, was stabbed following a dispute with a taxi driver.

Four other British teenagers, all understood to be former Hurst Community College pupils, are understood to have sustained non-fatal knife wounds in the incident.

Mr Sebbage suffered from neuropathic bowel disorder and his bravery in combatting the condition led to him meeting his England football heroes, including David Beckham, in 2007.

College principal Malcolm Christian said yesterday: “All at the Hurst Community College were saddened to hear of Robert's untimely death.

He held a special place in our hearts for the way in which he had fought hard to overcome a significant medical condition when he was younger.

“We remember the many friendships he had created, his quiet tenacity in overcoming adversity and how well he achieved with us at GCSE level prior to going on to sixth form college.”

Mr Sebbage lived at home with his parents Andy and Rhian and had two elder brothers, Martin and Steven.

A Foreign Office spokesman, who declined to be named, said: “I can confirm that five British nationals were involved in a serious incident in Zakynthos.

Sadly this resulted in the death of one British national and the hospitalisation of four others, one of whom is in a serious condition. We are in regular contact with the families of those involved and are providing consular assistance.”

Last night Mr Sebbage's father told Newburytoday.co.uk: “We've only just heard all the facts. We will be flying out there tomorrow (Thursday) to find out more for ourselves.”

Mr Sebbage, a member of Tadley Calleva Youth Football Team since the age of seven, fulfilled a lifelong dream when, in 2007, he stepped out on the Wembley turf as England mascot alongside Beckham.

Staff at North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke, where he had been treated for his medical condition, had nominated him to the charity Rays of Sunshine, which makes the wishes of deserving children come true.

The following year he was treated to another once-in-a-lifetime experience when he became a VIP guest of Formula One entrepreneur Bernie Ecclestone at the Grand Prix. He also visited the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team's garage to see the cars driven by Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen.

More than 700 people have registered condolences on a page entitled RIP Robert Sebbage on the social networking site Facebook.

Jonathan Pain wrote: “So sad to hear this news about one of my ex-pupils. Prayers are with your friends and family.”

Ben Angus wrote: “I just wish you knew how much we will all miss you. So for one last time, Robert Sebbage, sleep well, you absolute hero.”

Katie Louise Loughnane wrote: “RIP mate, you're missed and loved by so many people.” Sara Conran said: “So much respect for you Rob. You were one of the best. Can't put into words how sad I am for you and your lovely family.” An inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned shortly.
