Newbury tailor appeals for help as shop floods after non stop rain
Water poured into tailors Cloth and Scissors on Bartholomew Street last night (Monday) following days of non-stop rain.
Tailor Aleixo Fernandes said that he noticed water coming out of the shop before he entered it this morning.
“This morning I came here and there was water everywhere," he said.
“I came and looked from outside and then saw it.
“There were water markings on the door.
Luckily Mr Fernandes had his clothing and stock raised up above ground the night that the rain fell.
He went on to say: “Nothing has been damaged, it is just a lot of water.
“I had my clothes on racks but it is flooded in the basement.”
He has now had to lay down used cut offs and sheets on the ground to lessen the damage on the shop floor but the basement is still filled with water.
The basement became filled with around four inches of water after it flowed downwards from the soaked shop carpet.
Mr Fernandes said serving the community as a local tailor has been his “purpose” for the past nine years and is calling out to anyone who may be able to help him.
He said he would appreciate help from anyone who may be able to assist him in shifting the water from the basement.
This isn’t the first time Mr Fernandes’ shop has been flooded. He said that five years ago his basement filled, almost halfway up his basement stairs.
He is now considering changing his whole carpet as the water soaked the entirety of his floor.
