Tally Ho strikes out with B & B

Hungerford Newtown pub's new venture

The Tally Ho community pub in Hungerford Newtown could soon be offering bed-and-breakfast accommodation.

Planners have agreed proposals to convert a manager’s flat to provide bed-and-breakfast facilities.

The project involves converting a residential, three-bedroom flat to provide three bed-and-breakfast rooms.

Hungerford Town Council raised no objection.

A planning officer’s report stated: “The provision of bed-and-breakfast accommodation, whilst maintaining ancillary residential provision for staff at the public house, would not introduce any significant harm to the character and appearance of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in which it is located.

“Furthermore, the proposal is not considered to result in detrimental harm to the amenities of neighbouring properties or highway safety.”

In 2012 the former village pub was sold to would-be developers by brewery owner Wadworths but planning permission to turn it into homes was refused.

After a convoluted battle, a villagers’ consortium bought it back and reopened it as a thriving community pub.

It announced longer-term plans to install a micro brewery and to provide bed-and-breakfast accommodation, the latter of which formed the basis of the current plans.
