Tally Ho! undergoing a major refit after sale

The former village pub is currently undergoing a major refit, including the construction of a disabled toilet after former owners removed pub fixtures and fittings.
But the local consortium who bought it, including Hungerford Newtown villagers, need practical help.
Spokeswoman Brenda Lukey said: “The demolition work is nearly completed thanks to many wonderful, enthusiastic volunteers.
“But we need carpenters, plumbers, roofers and plasterers. Any time that anyone with these skills could give us would be so appreciated.
“Also, if anyone knows of any boilers, bar and electrical fittings and radiators available at cost price, please contact us.”
There was dismay last year when the ‘Tally’ was sold and Acres Developments sought planning permission to convert it into a terrace of three, three-bedroom homes.
Planning permission was refused.
A convoluted battle followed but villagers, backed by the West Berkshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and Newbury MP Richard Benyon, prevailed, eventually buying the building back.
Now they aim to reopen their village pub and community hub - but there is lots of work to do.
The ultimate aim is to re-open as a community pub featuring local beers and produce; longer term plans include installing a micro brewery, providing bed and breakfast accommodation and opening a community shop.
The Tally Ho! now has its own Facebook page at

Ms Lukey said: “Please take a look and 'like' the page.
"By doing this you will get up dates in your news feed on how the pub re-development is coming on. Also 'share' it if you will, to help spread the word even further.”
