According to Bob Mitchell, watch manager of red watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump was called at 1.20pm to a playing field at Kennet School in Stoney Lane.
The 4m by 4m grass fire was discovered to be out on arrival.
“A teacher spotted it in the grass and beat it out with cardboard,” said Mr Mitchell.
Firefighters left the scene after around ten minutes, with the cause put down to accidental.
