Team spirit at Newbury school brings in funds for sports wheelchair

Each of the girls who put themselves forward to take part in the Lord’s Taverners Charity Relay Marathon race in October ran 2.2 miles around the scenic parkland of Wellington College, Crowthorne.
Through individual sponsorship and a sweepstake they raised £1,530, which is enough for the charity to buy a new sports wheelchair.
Their efforts were recognised as they each received a commemorative certificate during assembly.
The charity had invited a number of schools from across the area to enter teams of 12 runners, whose challenge was to get a baton around the course as fast as possible.
Team one, ‘Issie’s Power Burners’ ran an impressive 3.55.14 and were placed third, while team two, the ‘Better Leighton than nevers’ clocked a respectable time of 4.21.26 to put them fourth.
The head of St Gabriel’s Junior School, Peter Dove, said: “Our school ethos is built on a sense of community and a willingness to take on challenges, and here is a fine example of how the two combine to help others.”
The Lord’s Taverners Charity funds specialist equipment for disabled children to enable them to access a wider variety of athletic activities.
