Newbury mayor introduces his teddy bear at Victoria Park picnic for children

Newbury mayor Billy Drummond welcomed children to Victoria Park on Tuesday for his very own teddy bear's picnic.

The town's first citizen was joined by his own bear, Bartholomew, and young people were encouraged to take their own picnic lunch.

Some light refreshments were, however, provided, and attendees took part in a variety of themed activities and games.

In all, around 40 children went along to the event, staged between 11am and 1pm.

The mayor said of the picnic: "It was really excellent, me and my wife had a fantastic time.

"There weren't many kids there to start with, so I went around like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, collecting all these kids up.

"It was really enjoyable – we didn't make lots of money, but it wasn't about the money, it was about having a nice time with the kids."
