In order to make the expedition, they will each need to raise more than £4,000 to cover their costs.

This weekend (Saturday) they will be selling stocking fillers, decorations, games and lots more at the Christmas and Bric-a-Brac market at the Thatcham Memorial Hall.

One of the young explorers taking on the four-week trip, 16-year-old Kennet pupil Lily Hopwood, said she is excited to help local people in Borneo and make a positive impact in the world.

She said: “Of course, it will also be an incredible, horizon-broadening experience and I hope to build self-confidence while I’m there.

“While some aspects will definitely be challenging, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to push myself outside of my comfort zone, as well as seeing all the incredible plants and wildlife.”

Mayor of Thatcham Mark Lillycrop will be opening the event.

Emily Fulker, 15 said her concern over the current state of the environment is fueling her motivation

“I have been working very hard to fund my own ticket to this amazing place,” she said.

“We learn about the rainforest at school so to see for myself is a fabulous opportunity. “Helping save the habitat for the animals will be my favourite project as my dream is to work with animals after school.

“I’m not sure what to expect, it is a little scary but I know it will all be worth it.”

In addition to gifts and cards, refreshments and cakes will be available to buy – all in the hope of getting the young people past that £4,000 goal.

Luke Johnson, 15, expressed his excitement about taking on such a trip.

He said: “I feel very honoured to have been given this amazing opportunity to go to Borneo next year to help with some environmental and humanitarian projects.

“I realise it will be a very challenging experience, but I know that I will gain so much confidence and growth from this trip.

“I am particularly looking forward to exploring and learning more about the wildlife in such a biologically diverse country and to forge memories that will last a lifetime.”

The market will be open on December 2 from 10.30am - 3.30pm at Thatcham Memorial Hall.

Admission is free.
