Soaring temperatures have led to the freezer and fridge aisles at the town's superstore going out of action.

Customers to Tesco Extra, Pinchington Lane, Newbury, hoping to stock up on frozen and chilled foods were met with empty shelves on Monday afternoon, after the cold storage system packed up in the hot weather.

The system was still down on Tuesday morning, as this early morning customer, who sent in these pictures to NewburyToday, discovered.

There are still some sections of chilled and frozen goods available, but the majority of the aisles are empty with a sign up saying: "Customer Notice: Out of order due to equipment breakdown. Sorry for any inconvenience caused."

The store did not know when the equipment would be up and running again.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Some refrigeration and freezer units at our Newbury Extra store are currently being worked on at by our maintenance teams who will get them back up and running as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
