Thames Valley and Hampshire air ambulances in Sky documentary
The first hour-long episode of the Sky 1 six-part series, Air Ambulance ER, broadcast on Tuesday at 9pm, and followed the work of emergency crews on the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIWAA), from receiving a call to treating patients, often in difficult-to-reach locations.
The Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance (TVCAA) features in episode two next Tuesday (Jan 12) and throughout the series, which in some cases follows the patient’s journey into hospital and their recovery.
The series is a co-production between Tern TV, GroupM Entertainment and Sky 1 and Helen Bell, Tern creative director and executive producer said it was a “privilege,” to make.
She said: “We’ve secured incredible access to remarkable characters, pioneering surgery and life changing stories.”
Tern TV producer, Louise Say, added: “Back at base they filmed the lighter moments of the close knit team - anything from making a cuppa to cleaning.”
The production team spent four months last summer filming with the TVCAA crew, as they embarked on hundreds of missions across Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, bringing emergency care to the roadside in minutes.
Dr Syed Masud, clinical lead for TVCAA said they were “thrilled” to be part of the documentary series.
“We hope this shows how 365 days a year we’re committed to being there to save lives," he said. "There is a high level of medical expertise and equipment on the helicopter which means we really are able to bring the hospital to the roadside in the quickest time possible.”
Viewers witness life-saving surgery and pioneering medicine on the front line provided by the air ambulance service, which is heavily reliant on financial donations to keep airborne.
The next episode broadcasts at 9pm on Sky1 on Tuesday.
