Thatcham bellringers aim to make record books
St Mary's Church bellringers to be one of only five in the country to ring a peal for a thousandth time
THE bellringers at St Mary's Church, Thatcham are hoping to join the record books by ringing out the full peal of bells for the 1,000th time this evening (Friday).
The team is hoping to complete their thousandth full peal of bells and be only the fifth tower in Britain ever to do it and the first ever in the home counties.
There are 5,686 bell towers in Britain.
St Mary's Church in Church Gate has ten bells, the lightest weighing 280lbs and the heaviest 1,479lbs.
A 'ring' or 'peal' of bells is a lengthy series of variations on the order of the different notes of the bells.
Ten bell ringers will take part in the challenge from 6pm until 9pm this evening.
