Thatcham boxing coach to take Olympic flame through Reading
Paul Cooke, aged 47 of Elmhurst Road, was picked as one of 8,000 people who will be helping delivering the torch to the Olympic Stadium in London.
He will run the torch on a Reading leg of the route on July 11.
Mr Cooke was nominated by several members of Thames Valley Amateur Boxing Clubs where he has been a volunteer coach for about 25-years.
He was nominated by club members including Jackie Thompson, his nephew 13-year-old Jake Kingham and Marley Churcher, who he has coached and whose father coached Mr Cooke.
Mr Cooke, who thanked the people who nominated him, said: "They nominated me because of the dedication I have put into the gym.
"People ask me whether I get paid but it's just my hobby."
He added: "I'm delighted; honoured really.
"I'm going to be a part of history."
He found out that he was going to be one of the bearers before Christmas but was sworn to secrecy.
He said: "It was a complete surprise.
"They (the club members) did talk about it last year but I didn't think the nomination would ever happen.
"It has taken a while for it to sink in.
"Now that it has been announced it's becoming more of a reality."
Mr Cooke said that he started training for his leg the however, said he was relieved when he found out the distance was shorter than when he initially thought.
He said: "I thought I should get into shape but I have just found out that we are only doing 300m.
"I have been practicing my running and waving as I don't want to do it too fast."
He said that although he would have preferred to be running through his home town, it was still an honour.
He added: "I'm really excited about it; it's a once in a life time opportunity."
