Swings and Smiles had a ball with patron Chris Tarrant at Newbury Racecourse and raised an “incredible” £36,400 at the 'Fall Ball' for children and young people with special needs.

Among the 200 guests who joined the former Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? host was Thomas Forrester, from television show Bargain Hunt.

The daytime TV star hosted a live auction for the charity, who rely on £440,000 a year through fundraising, at the event last weekend.

The centre, on Lower Way, recently opened a sensory room to accompany its activity room, soft play room with ball pool and a garden space.

Guests at the charity ball also heard a moving speech from trustee Amanda Walburn-Green, whose daughter has been attending Swings and Smiles since it first opened in 2014.

CEO Laura Lewis said: “We are thrilled to have finally been able to hold our Fall Ball and to have raised such a fantastic amount towards our work supporting children with special needs and their families.

“We couldn’t have done it without the help of everyone who donated to or supported the event, we’re very grateful to everyone who helped.”

The charity’s next event is a Gin Tasting Night, and will take place at The Globe on November 4.

Tickets can be purchased via Swings & Smiles' website.
