Thatcham Cookafun goes down a treat

Hundreds of young people attend local cooking competition

HUNDREDS of Guides, Brownies and Rainbows rustled up tasty treats at Kennet School for a cooking competition last week.

The Cookafun challenge saw the girls take part in cooking and other activities to promote healthy eating while encouraging them to expand their culinary knowledge.

The challenge goes toward their Cookafun badge.

Troupes from across Berkshire mustered at the Stoney Lane School on May 9 where the Rainbows made smoothies; Brownies produced pizzas; Guides and the senior section cooked a two-course meal and leaders made savoury tarts.

And Reading College chef Paul Buckey, food tech teacher at Kennet School Ceri McCelland, and chef Andrew Lenaghan judged the 1st Basildon Rainbows, 2nd Bradfield Brownies, 1st Thatcham Guides, Kennet Vale Rangers and Alison Pocock for the Leaders as the winners of their rounds.

Leader with the 3rd Thatcham Guides, Jenny Poland, said that the day went extremely well and was enjoyed by everyone. She also thanked Tesco (London Road store) for providing all of the food free of charge.

The winners will represent the region at the national guiding cookafest competition to be held in Exeter in July.
