Thatcham engineer is awarded army's most prestigious commendation
David Lavery, aged 40, who has been a member of the Territorial Army (TA) since 2006 and has worked for Quicklight Limited in Station Road for six years, received his award for his outstanding performance during his deployment in Afghanistan.
Mr Lavery, a civilian engineer, is a member of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).
He received his award from Major Gen Ian Dale in front of his family at Horse Guards.
After receiving the award, Mr Lavery said: "The six months were very demanding and hard work, we were attached to two Close Support Battalion, not only did my TA
training kick in but my Technical civilian background proved invaluable."
He was deployed to Afghanistan on Operation Herrick for six months from April 2011 to October 2011, as one of only two Vehicle Electricians working within the Battalion.
General Dale said: "It is difficult to put into context what this man has done.
"What Corporal Lavery has done has been battle winning and life saving.”
"David is the absolute epitome of what Territorial Army soldiers have to offer. His dedication and devotion to duty proved a true force multiplier to the fighting soldiers in the Patrol Bases around Helmand Province. For his outstanding performance during his deployment I have great pleasure in presenting him with the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service.”
Mr Lavery's mother, Jane Lavery, said: "I am so proud of my son, this is the first time I have heard what he had done, but I am so relieved he is back.”
